The Carolina Panthers placed Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve on Wednesday, meaning the All-Pro running back will miss at least three games.

McCaffrey sustained a high ankle sprain in the Panthers' loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. McCaffrey scored two touchdowns and left the game hobbled after a 7-yard score.

The Panthers (0-2) finished the game with McCaffrey on the sideline for the final 13 minutes.

Coach Matt Rhule said Monday that McCaffrey could miss four to six weeks, but McCaffrey said he doesn't intend to be out that long.

"Well -- that's a challenge to me. And I'm gonna attack it, like I attack anything else," McCaffrey said.

Through the first two games, he has four touchdowns and 223 yards from scrimmage.

McCaffrey, 24, is the NFL's highest-paid running back, thanks to a four-year, $64 million contract he signed in the offseason. In 2019, he gained 2,392 total yards on his way to a first-team All-Pro selection.

The Panthers said Mike Davis will start in McCaffrey's place on Sunday when they meet the Chargers in Los Angeles.

The earliest McCaffrey could return is Oct. 18 against the Chicago Bears. He will be sidelined when the Panthers host the Arizona Cardinals (Oct. 4) and when they travel to Atlanta to face the division rival Falcons (Oct. 11).

The Panthers also announced they moved offensive lineman Chris Reed from the COVID-19 reserve list to the active roster.
