It was a number of positive COVID-19 tests that threw Nashville SC's inaugural season into chaos and now a false positive is causing the club more issues.

Nashville SC head coach Gary Smith was not with his club Wednesday's at Dallas for his team's first game in five months after a false positive COVID-19 test disrupted his travel plans. By the time the confusion was sorted out and he had two consecutive negative tests, he was unable to make it to the game.

Nashville SC and FC Dallas were meeting Wednesday one day after the MLS is Back Tournament was completed near Orlando, with the Portland Timbers earning a 2-1 victory over Orlando City in the title game. Neither Nashville SC nor FC Dallas played in the tournament because of multiple positive COVID-19 tests on their teams before the event started.

Assistant coach Steve Guppy took over coaching duties Wednesday in place of Smith. The teams are scheduled to meet again Sunday at Dallas with Smith expected to be on the bench. Nashville is set to play at home on Aug. 22 against Atlanta United FC.
